Pompeii: A Glimpse into Ancient History

Visiting the Vesuvius National Park allows you to take a walk through at least two million years of history. The large caldera of Mount Somma represents what remains of an ancient volcano from three hundred thousand years ago, and inside it lies the Gran Cono of Mount Vesuvius (1281 meters), with its characteristic truncated cone shape, a diameter of 450 meters, and a depth of 300 meters. Inside, small fumaroles reveal its state of “active rest.”

Along trail number 5, which is marked over the ashes and pumice from the last eruption in 1944, you can admire the interior of the crater. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the Gulf and the city of Naples. There are 11 trails in total. Trail number 9 allows you to observe how vegetation is reclaiming the land over the lava flows of the 20th century, which occurred in 1906, 1929, and 1944.

Mount Vesuvius is also home to fantastic products. Lacryma Christi, a white and red DOC wine made from various grape varieties grown on the slopes of the volcano, has been cherished since Roman times. The area is also famous for its apricots, with around 40 varieties cultivated in volcanic soil rich in minerals, particularly potassium, which gives them their sweet and flavorful taste.

Other local delights include the yellow-pink cherries from Monte, known for their firm, light flesh, and the Catalanesca grape, imported from Catalonia in the 15th century, which remains on the vine until Christmas. The Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP cherry tomatoes, harvested in clusters and hung in dry places, can last 7-8 months, maintaining their intense flavor thanks to their high sugar content and rich organic acids.

The Vesuvius National Park offers a mix of natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes, ancient cultivation traditions, and a rich cultural heritage, making it one of the most captivating and visited places in the world.
